Normal growth= 0.1mm per day.

  • Anonychia (loss of a nail).
  • Onycholysis (destruction of the nail).
  • Onychophagia (nail damage by own bites).
  • Onycholauxis (nail hypertrophy).
  • Koylonychia (spoon nails in iron deficiency anemia).
  • Leukonychia (white discoloration of the nail).
  • Splinter hemorrhages (endocarditis).


  • Types of Nails:

    1) Plummer's nails: separation of the nail bed -more in the ring finger- hyperthyroidism.
    2) Terry's nails: white with normal pink tips (cirrhosis).
    3) Lindsay's nails: half-and-half. proximal portion is white, distal portion is red (renal failure).
    4) Muehrcke's nails: white transverse bands (Mees' lines) in hypoalbuminemia.
    5) Beau lines: depressed creases (in trauma).
